The General settings page for a project lets you rename it and manage which playbook is applied. To open it, go to Settings > Projects, select a project, and open the General tab.
Renaming a project
Edit the Project name field with the new desired name and click Save. Your changes are reflected across the platform—in navigation menus and member lists for the project.
Playbook
A playbook defines the document types and key terms used in this project. The currently assigned playbook (if any) appears under the Playbook section. If there is no playbook applied, you will see "No playbook applied."
Changing the playbook
Click Change in the playbook section to open the playbook picker. You can only select from Projects type playbooks for assignment.
Important: Changing a playbook replaces the current document types and key terms. Existing documents will be recategorized to match the new playbook’s configuration. This action cannot be undone.
Real-time feedback during playbook application
When you apply a playbook to a data room, Emma provides real-time feedback throughout the process. A progress dialog opens, displaying the status as document types, areas, and key terms are created, checks are applied, and documents are reclassified to match the new structure. You will see the current phase and progress numbers for each step:
Create document types: Tracks how many document types have been added, giving you a sense of how quickly the new structure is established.
Apply checks: Monitors as the project’s checklists are created and attached, so you can see when the workflow will be ready for triage.
Reclassify documents: Indicates how many documents have already been matched to the new document types and how many remain; this continues in the background so you can start reviewing immediately.
Each phase advances when the previous one completes, and the dialog provides a clear summary upon completion. This transparency ensures you always know the status of your project restructuring—particularly helpful during deal preparation or last-minute playbook changes where timing and alignment with the deal team are critical.
You may choose to close the dialog and continue working while the process completes in the background.
Playbook edits: stability and organization
When editing a playbook, you can add, remove, or reorder areas and document types for a project. Emma streamlines these operations:
Cascading area deletions: If you delete a playbook area, all its document types—if any remain—are deleted along with it. There is no longer an error about needing to delete document types first. This makes it quick to restructure the playbook during setup or ongoing project management.
Confirmation modal for last document type: If you delete the last document type within an area, Emma prompts you to confirm before deleting the area as well. Review the modal carefully: confirming deletes both the document type and the area in a single step. This prevents accidental removal of key organizational units.
Automatic reordering and renumbering: After deleting playbook areas or document types, Emma automatically reorders and renumbers them. This keeps the numbering and order clear and consistent, supporting easier cross-checking with deal schedules and clearer disclosure when exporting or sharing with counterparties.
Playbook scope reliability on edit and switch
Emma uses playbook areas and document types as the backbone for document organization, checklists, and reporting. In deal work, project scopes—such as which areas apply to a given checklist—are critical for tracking coverage and risk.
If you delete areas or document types used in an active scope (for example, after switching to or editing a new playbook), Emma automatically falls back to the closest valid scope. For example, if specific document types are referenced but no longer present, Emma switches the scope to the next wider grouping, such as all areas or the entire playbook. This ensures that checklist application, reporting, and exports continue to work reliably even as playbook contents change, avoiding errors or failed operations after reconfigurations.
Managing playbooks
Playbooks are created and edited in Settings > Organization settings > Playbooks. See Playbooks for full details.
