Matrix chat

Ask AI questions about the documents in a Matrix document type without leaving the Matrix view.

Written by Paul Gaston GOURON

Matrix chat is an AI assistant panel built directly into the Matrix. It lets you ask questions about the documents in the currently selected document type — without leaving the table view. Answers stream inline and are scoped to the files visible in that document type by default.

For data-room-wide chat (all document types at once), use Chat. For single-document questions, use Document chat assistant.

Opening Matrix chat

  1. Open the Matrix from the main sidebar.

  2. Select a document type in the left sidebar to load its table.

  3. At the bottom of the table you will see a chat bar labelled “Ask anything about these documents…” — click it to open the chat overlay.

The chat panel slides in from the right side of the Matrix, overlaying the table. The table remains fully visible and interactive behind it.

Scope — which documents are searched

By default, Matrix chat searches the documents in the currently selected document type. If you have a specific document type open (for example, Employment Contracts), the AI focuses its answers on those files — which typically produces faster and more accurate results than searching the entire data room.

You can widen or narrow the scope at any time:

  1. Click the Sources button in the bottom-left corner of the chat input.

  2. The Select sources dialog opens — add or remove files from the context.

  3. Apply to update the scope for the rest of this session.

The Sources button shows the current scope: All files, N of M files, or Searching N areas (if your access is restricted to certain areas).

Asking questions

Type your question in the input bar and press Enter (or click the send button). The AI searches the scoped documents and streams an answer with inline citations.

Example questions when reviewing Employment Contracts:

  • “Which contracts have a non-solicitation clause?”

  • “What is the longest notice period across all contracts?”

  • “Are there any agreements without a termination-for-cause provision?”

  • “Summarise the key obligations in the HR contracts”

Click any inline citation to jump directly to the source document and passage in the document viewer.

Sessions and history

Matrix chat uses the same session model as the main Chat page:

  • Each conversation is a separate session, saved automatically.

  • Use the History button in the overlay header to browse and reopen previous sessions.

  • Click New chat (pencil icon) to start a fresh conversation while preserving history.

  • Sessions are saved per data room — they persist across browser refreshes and can be resumed later.

Background streaming

If you close the chat overlay while the AI is still generating an answer, the response continues in the background. The chat bar at the bottom of the Matrix shows a status indicator (Searching documents… / Generating response…). Click it to reopen the overlay and see the completed answer.
