The Matrix provides a detailed, structured overview of all information Emma has extracted from your data room, organized in a table grouped by document type. Access it from the main sidebar under Matrix, or from the Matrix tab inside any document type on the Documents page.
In the video below we will show you all the features of our Matrix.
In this article, as well as the others linked below, you'll find in-depth guidance on Matrix features and reviewing extracted document data.
Why the Matrix matters
The Matrix brings together all discovered facts, summaries, and key terms from your documents, giving lawyers and analysts full visibility on data room content across types. Its real-time extraction and property management features enable you to monitor document analysis progress and support deal tasks like triaging issues, reviewing compliance, and preparing disclosure schedules.
Opening the Matrix
Click Matrix in the main sidebar.
In the left sidebar you will see all document types in your data room. Click one to load the table for that type.
Use the tab bar above the table to switch between Info, Risks, and Key terms.
If no document types appear in the sidebar, your data room does not yet have documents classified into types. See Categorize a single document to get started.
Managing document types
You cannot add new document types directly from the Matrix sidebar. To add or edit document types in your data room, use the document type management features located elsewhere in Emma (for example, from the Documents page or project setup screens). The Matrix sidebar will list document types as they exist within your data room. This change clarifies document type control, ensuring that document types are curated centrally—helpful when maintaining a consistent contract classification scheme for due diligence and schedule drafting.
The three sub-tabs
The Matrix has three sub-tabs, accessible from the tab bar above the table:
Info — document details and summaries (covered in this article)
Risks — one column per check, showing risk levels per document — see Checks and Risks
Key terms — AI-extracted values per document type property — see Key terms
The Info tab
The Info tab displays each document as a row with the following columns:
File — document name with a short AI-generated summary directly below it
Jurisdiction — the jurisdiction extracted from the document
Date — the document date
Summary — a longer AI-generated summary
Expected signatures — the number of expected signatories
Reviewed by — team members who have reviewed the document
You can show or hide individual columns using the column settings in the toolbar.
Key terms and document properties in the Matrix
Key term (property) columns in the Key terms sub-tab now provide enhanced real-time feedback and improved clarity when reviewing document extractions:
Real-time extraction and status: Each property cell shows live extraction and processing status. When a key term value is being extracted or updated, the cell displays a loading state directly in the table ("skeleton" effect). This allows you to monitor extraction progress per property as properties are queued, processed, or refreshed—useful, for example, when assessing which contracts have received fresh key term analysis versus which are still in progress or need review before schedule finalization.
Stable property identification and reliable lookups: Each property cell lookup is fully stable by property ID as well as name. This means property updates, extractions, or references are reliably matched document-to-column even as properties evolve.
Inline property-type icons: Property columns and property names show an inline icon that indicates the property type (for example, date, party, or number). This makes it easier to scan for relevant extraction types when auditing results.
No more bulk property actions: The UI for bulk-selection and bulk deletion of key terms or properties has been removed. All property actions are now performed individually. This helps avoid mistakes and clarifies intent, especially when working on a property-by-property basis before disclosure or key term review.
How property extraction appears
When a property is being extracted for a document, the affected Matrix cell immediately shows a loading skeleton. This status updates in real time as extraction completes.
Property extraction and filling is now visible per property, per document. You can always see at a glance which properties are in progress or pending. When extraction finishes, the cell value appears automatically.
If you double-click a property cell, you'll open the detailed property view for that document and property, supporting deeper investigation.
These improvements make it easier to track what information Emma has found, which values are recent or require attention, and where further review is needed—all critical for precise due diligence and robust disclosure.
Resizable layout
Resize columns: Hover over any column header edge and drag left or right. Double-click the resize handle to reset to the default width.
Layout is saved: Column widths are remembered per document type and per sub-tab.
Resize the sidebar: Drag the sidebar edge to make it wider or narrower.
Full screen: Click the full screen button to expand the Matrix over the full main area.
Unsure categorization
If the AI was not certain how to categorize a document, you will see a warning icon next to its name in any tab. Click the icon to open the categorization wizard directly from the Matrix. See Categorize a single document for more information.
The Matrix inside Documents
The Matrix is also embedded as a tab inside each document type on the Documents page (Documents → select a document type → Matrix tab). This shows the same table, scoped to that document type, so you can review risks and key terms without leaving the Documents workflow.
The improved document property and real-time extraction features are available here as well, helping you quickly see extraction progress or review specific properties as you work through documents in detail.
If you need additional help with the Matrix or encounter any other problem, don't hesitate to reach out through the chat bubble in the bottom right or contact [email protected].
